Why You Should Join A Society At University

I hesitated until was in my last year that i joined a university society.  I can’t believe it took me that long! Joining has added so much more to my university experience and given my social life a boost.  Here are just a few reasons why you should join a society or club as soon as you get the opportunity.

The Social Benefits

You will underestimate the amount of social events that come with joining.  From the weekly social, trips abroad and the end of semester pub crawls there an abundance of opportunities to get to know your fellow members and form some lasting friendships.

The Skills

Societies and clubs give the key to open many doors.  Not only will you gain skills that will enhance your CV…such as, being treasurer for the committee but you can also learn new skill like surfing! The amount of societies at universities is overwhelming. For example, Glasgow Uni has 250 different societies.

One of the most understated skills today is networking. You never know who you will meet…a future business partner…a travel buddy…or someone who can rescue you when your car breaks down. Master this and it can take you places, professionally and socially.

Lead An Active Lifestyle

It’s too easy to get sucked into a Netflix black hole and become anti-social between lectures and getting drunk at university. Joining a society can help counteract this. By providing much-needed structure your life needs to meet deadlines and help you regularly exercise (that’s only if it’s a sports society…the Toast Appreciation Society doesn’t count).

Giving back

When you decide to join a society or club your going to LOVE it.  You can use the annual fundraiser as a way of saying ‘Thank You’ to your society/club by raising some money to keep it running. This is one of the highlights as it usually includes getting all your buds together to take part in a fun night like speed-dating with another society or a themed pub crawl.

So what are you waiting for? Get out there and find out what societies are available at your uni and sign up!
